What is that 'cracking' or 'popping' sound during an adjustment?
That sound is a common and usually harmless phenomenon called joint cavitation. When a joint is gapped during an adjustment, the pressure inside the joint decreases, allowing dissolved gases in the joint fluid to form a bubble, which then quickly collapses, creating the 'pop'. It doesn't mean bones are cracking, and many effective adjustments occur without any sound at all.
Do Chiropractors work with other healthcare professionals?
Yes, Chiropractors often believe in a collaborative approach to healthcare. We frequently work with and refer to other healthcare professionals such as family physicians, physiotherapists, massage therapists, naturopathic doctors, and specialists when it is in the best interest of our patients to ensure comprehensive and optimal care.
Do chiropractors provide exercises or stretches?
Yes, exercises and stretches are an integral part of many chiropractic treatment strategies. Your Chiropractor will likely show you specific movements to do at home to help speed up your recovery, maintain your progress, and prevent the problem from returning.
Is chiropractic care covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) in ON?
Generally, OHIP does not cover chiropractic services in private clinics for most of the population. There might be very limited exceptions through specific government programs or if care is delivered within a Community Health Centre or Family Health Team that has integrated chiropractic services, but such cases are rare. It is advisable to check with your private insurance provider for coverage details.
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a Chiropractor in ON?
Chiropractors are primary contact healthcare professionals, meaning patients can book an appointment directly without a referral from a medical doctor. However, some private or extended health insurance plans may still require a doctor's referral for reimbursement purposes. It is recommended to verify the specifics of your insurance policy.
