What should I expect during my first chiropractic appointment?
Your first visit typically involves a thorough consultation and examination. Your Chiropractor will discuss your detailed health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and treatment goals. This is followed by a comprehensive physical examination which may include postural analysis, spinal assessment, range of motion tests, orthopedic tests, and neurological screenings. Based on these findings, your Chiropractor will discuss a diagnosis (or clinical impression) and propose a personalized treatment plan. Often, some form of treatment or advice is provided during this initial session, if appropriate.
Is chiropractic care covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) in ON?
In Ontario, OHIP generally does not cover chiropractic services provided in private clinics. There may be very limited exceptions such as care delivered within a Community Health Centre or a Family Health Team with integrated chiropractic services, but these are rare. Patients are advised to check with their private insurance plans for coverage details.
Is it safe to see a chiropractor if I'm pregnant?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is generally considered safe and can be very effective for managing common musculoskeletal complaints such as back pain, pelvic girdle pain, and sciatica. Chiropractors are trained to work with pregnant women and use modified adjustment techniques and specialized tables or pillows to ensure comfort and safety for both mother and baby. Some chiropractors, like Dr. Tari, are also certified in the Webster Technique, a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment for pregnant women.
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a Chiropractor in ON?
Chiropractors are primary contact healthcare professionals, so patients can book an appointment directly without a referral. However, some private or extended health insurance plans may require a doctor’s referral for reimbursement purposes. Patients are advised to verify their individual insurance policies.
What is that 'cracking' or 'popping' sound during an adjustment?
The 'cracking' or 'popping' sound, technically called cavitation, is caused by the release of gas from the joint fluid when it is rapidly stretched or moved during an adjustment. This sound is normal and does not indicate the effectiveness of the treatment; the primary goal is to restore joint mobility and reduce nerve irritation.
Is there parking available at or near Movement Chiropractic & Rehab?
Yes, there is free patient parking available directly in front of or behind our building. Metered street parking is also available on nearby streets, and paid parking options are accessible in nearby lots.
What does a chiropractor mean by a 'subluxation' or 'joint restriction'?
A 'vertebral subluxation' or 'joint restriction' refers to a joint that has lost its normal position or motion, potentially irritating surrounding nerves and tissues. The goal of chiropractic care is to correct these restrictions and restore proper joint function for improved health and reduced symptoms.
