- Will I need to get X-rays before starting chiropractic care?
- X-rays are not routinely required for every patient. Dr. Ghoosi will conduct a thorough history and physical examination to determine if imaging studies are clinically necessary. Typically, imaging is recommended to rule out more serious conditions such as fractures or pathology, assess for significant spinal degeneration or instability, or if a patient's condition is not improving as expected with conservative care. All imaging decisions are made following established diagnostic guidelines to minimize radiation exposure.
- What is that 'cracking' or 'popping' sound during an adjustment?
- The 'cracking' or 'popping' sound, technically called cavitation, is thought to be caused by the release of gas (mainly nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide) from the synovial fluid within a joint when it is stretched or moved quickly during an adjustment. It’s similar to the sound made when you crack your knuckles. The sound itself is not the goal of the adjustment and does not indicate treatment effectiveness; the primary aim is to restore proper joint motion and relieve nerve pressure.
- Do I need a doctor's referral to see a Chiropractor in ON?
- Chiropractors are primary contact healthcare professionals in Ontario, meaning patients can book an appointment directly without a referral from a medical doctor. However, some private or extended health insurance plans may still require a doctor’s referral for reimbursement purposes. It’s advisable to check your specific insurance policy details.
- Is chiropractic treatment, especially an adjustment, painful?
- Most patients find chiropractic adjustments to be a comfortable procedure. The goal is to reduce pain and improve function. While there might be a brief moment of pressure, it’s rarely painful. If your muscles are very tight or joints inflamed, you may experience some temporary soreness afterward. Your Chiropractor will tailor the force and technique to suit your needs and discuss any concerns.
- What should I expect during my first chiropractic appointment?
- During your initial visit, Dr. Ghoosi will take the time to understand your health concerns through a detailed medical history and physical examination focusing on your spine, posture, and movement. She will explain her findings, answer your questions, and recommend a personalized care plan. You may receive your first adjustment or other therapies during this visit.
- Is chiropractic care covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) in ON?
- In Ontario, OHIP generally does not cover chiropractic services in private clinics for most patients. There are very limited exceptions, such as care provided within certain Community Health Centres or Family Health Teams that have integrated chiropractic services, but these are rare. It is important to check your private insurance plan for coverage and reimbursement options.
