Is chiropractic care covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) in ON?
Ontario's OHIP generally does not cover chiropractic services in private clinics for most of the population. There may be very limited exceptions through specific government programs or if care is delivered within a Community Health Centre or Family Health Team that has integrated chiropractic services, but these are rare. Patients are strongly advised to check their private insurance plans for coverage details and benefits.
Will I need to get X-rays before starting chiropractic care?
X-rays are not routinely required for every patient. Dr. Bowler will conduct a thorough history and physical examination to determine whether imaging is necessary. Imaging is typically recommended to rule out serious conditions such as fractures, significant degeneration, or instability, especially if the patient is not improving with conservative care, always following established guidelines to minimize radiation exposure.
What kind of education and training do chiropractors in Canada receive?
Canadian chiropractors complete a rigorous post-secondary Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree, which generally requires at least three years of undergraduate university education followed by four years of intensive study at an accredited chiropractic college. Their education includes comprehensive training in basic sciences, clinical sciences, and chiropractic-specific techniques, complemented by extensive hands-on clinical internships. Graduates must pass national and provincial licensing examinations to practice legally.
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a Chiropractor in ON?
In Ontario, as in all provinces, chiropractors are primary contact healthcare professionals, meaning patients can book an appointment directly without a referral. However, some private or extended health insurance plans may still require a referral for reimbursement purposes. Patients are encouraged to verify their insurance policy requirements.
What is Back In Balance Muskoka Chiropractic & Acupuncture's appointment cancellation policy?
We understand that life happens! To ensure we can accommodate all our patients, we kindly request at least 24 hours' notice for any appointment cancellations or rescheduling. Appointments missed or canceled with less than 24 hours' notice may be subject to a cancellation fee. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to make changes.
What is that 'cracking' or 'popping' sound during an adjustment?
This sound is a common and usually harmless phenomenon called joint cavitation. When a joint is gapped during an adjustment, the pressure inside the joint decreases, allowing dissolved gases in the joint fluid to form a bubble, which then quickly collapses, creating the 'pop'. It doesn’t mean bones are cracking, and many effective adjustments occur without any sound at all.
Is chiropractic treatment, especially an adjustment, painful?
An adjustment itself is typically not painful. You might hear a 'pop' or 'crack', which is just gas being released from the joint, not bones cracking. Some people might feel a bit sore the next day, similar to after a workout, but this is usually mild and temporary. Dr. Bowler ensures your comfort during treatment.
