Frequently Asked Questions about Chiropractic Care

What is chiropractic care and how can it help me?
Chiropractic is a healthcare profession focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system, primarily the spine, and their effects on overall health. Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation (adjustments) and other manual therapies, as well as exercise, and lifestyle counseling, to relieve pain, restore function, and support your body's natural ability to heal. It can help with issues like back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint problems in your arms or legs.
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a Chiropractor in ON?
In Ontario, chiropractors are primary contact healthcare professionals, which means you can book an appointment directly without a referral from a medical doctor. However, some private or extended health insurance plans may require a doctor's referral for reimbursement purposes. It is advisable to check your individual insurance policy to confirm coverage.
Is chiropractic care covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) in ON?
Generally, OHIP does not cover chiropractic services provided in private clinics. There are very limited exceptions, such as care delivered within specific government-funded programs or in certain community health settings, but these are rare for private practice. Patients are encouraged to verify their coverage with their private insurance plans.
Is there parking available at or near Humber River Physio and Rehab?
Yes, there is free patient parking available directly in front of or behind our building. Limited street parking may also be available nearby, and paid parking in the public parkade located one block east of the clinic is an option if needed.
What is Humber River Physio and Rehab's appointment cancellation policy?
We understand that life happens! However, to ensure we can accommodate all our patients, we kindly request at least 24 hours' notice for any appointment cancellations or rescheduling. Appointments missed or cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice may be subject to a cancellation fee. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to make changes.
What is that 'cracking' or 'popping' sound during an adjustment?
That sound is a common and usually harmless phenomenon called joint cavitation. When a joint is gapped during an adjustment, the pressure inside the joint decreases, allowing dissolved gases in the joint fluid to form a bubble, which then quickly collapses, creating the 'pop'. It doesn't mean bones are cracking, and many effective adjustments occur without any sound at all.
What kind of education and training do chiropractors in Canada receive?
Chiropractors in Canada complete a rigorous post-secondary Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree, which typically requires a minimum of three years of undergraduate university education followed by four years of intensive study at an accredited chiropractic college. The program includes comprehensive training in basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, biomechanics; clinical sciences including diagnostic imaging, orthopedics, differential diagnosis; and chiropractic-specific subjects like adjusting techniques and rehabilitation. This education also involves extensive hands-on clinical internship experience. Graduates must pass demanding national and provincial licensing examinations to practice legally.
