- What is that 'cracking' or 'popping' sound during an adjustment?
- The 'cracking' or 'popping' sound, technically called a cavitation, is thought to be caused by the release of gas (mainly nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide) from the synovial fluid within a joint when it is stretched or moved quickly during an adjustment. It's similar to the sound made when you crack your knuckles. The sound itself is not the goal of the adjustment and is not indicative of whether the treatment was effective; the primary aim is to restore proper joint motion and relieve nerve pressure.
- What are the typical phases of chiropractic care?
- Chiropractic care often progresses through a few general phases: 1. Initial Intensive/Relief Care: This phase focuses on reducing your immediate pain, inflammation, and discomfort. Visits may be more frequent during this stage. 2. Corrective/Rehabilitative Care: Once symptoms are under control, the focus shifts to correcting underlying joint dysfunction, improving muscle strength and flexibility, and restoring normal movement patterns. Visit frequency usually decreases. 3. Wellness/Maintenance Care (Optional): Some patients choose periodic visits to maintain their improvements, prevent recurrences, and support overall spinal health and well-being. Your Chiropractor will discuss what's appropriate for your specific situation and goals.
- Is chiropractic care covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) in ON?
- Currently, in Ontario, OHIP generally does not cover chiropractic services in private clinics for most of the population. There may be very limited exceptions through specific government programs or if care is delivered within a Community Health Centre or Family Health Team that has integrated chiropractic services, but these are rare for typical private practice. Patients should check with their private insurance for coverage details.
- Do I need a doctor's referral to see a Chiropractor in ON?
- No. Chiropractors are primary contact healthcare professionals, so you can book an appointment directly without a referral. However, some private/extended health insurance plans may require a doctor's referral for reimbursement purposes. It is recommended to verify your insurance policy's requirements.
- What kind of clothing should I wear to my chiropractic appointment?
- It’s best to wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing that allows for ease of movement. Athletic wear, leggings, comfortable pants, and a t-shirt are generally good choices. This allows your Chiropractor to easily assess your posture and movement, and perform any necessary examinations or treatments. You may be asked to change into a gown for certain parts of the examination if needed.
